Why isn't my hair growing? (2023)

You can keep your hair shorter and more manageable with regular cuts, but sometimes it's fun to switch it up and go long. However, if your hair growth seems to stop instead of gaining the length you want, it can be very frustrating.

Read on to find out why your hair may have stopped growing and what you can do, as well as find outwhat products should you use to achieve thicker, fuller and longer hair.

Causes of delayed hair growth

To explore the reasons why hair might stop growing, VEGAMOUR spoke with a certified trichologist.dr. activated celestiteand a hair surgeon,dr. Harikiran Chekuri.

"Hair usually stops growing when the hair follicles go into a resting phase and simply refuse to grow any more," said Dr. Chekuri. "It can be caused by a number of factors such as genetics, age or stress." Dr. Chekuri explained that it's also possible for hair to become damaged over time due to poor hair care habits or exposure to chemicals or heat. "This can lead to breakage and split ends that prevent hair growth," he said.

"Stuttering hair growth [also] can be due to nutritional deficiencies," added Dr. Gaitu. "Lack of elements such as vitamin D, zinc and iron, as well as macroelements, can stifle hair growth. Genetic makeup or genetic abnormalities and poor hygiene habits can also be to blame."

Why does hair seem to stop growing at a certain length?

"Hair growth can stop at a certain length due to the end of the growth phase period," said Dr. Gaitu. "Hair grows in a cycle that has three stages. The growth phase, the resting phase, and the shedding phase. The growth phase lasts between two and six years...and is genetically determined." The doctor Gaitu explained that once the hair reaches the end of its growth phase, it stops growing and begins to fall, which precedes the growth of new hair.

But the growth cycle of your hair is not the only thing that can influence the length of your hair. "Hair care practices, such as excessive heat styling and excessive chemical processing and styling, can lead to hair breakage...and rob hair of length," said Dr. Gaitu.

Factors Affecting Hair Growth Cycles

Whether due to hair care habits, lifestyle choices, genetics, or medical conditions, there are a number of reasons why hair growth can be stunted.

genetics

"Genetics play a role in how quickly and easily our hair will grow, as well as its overall thickness," said Dr. Chekuri. "People with naturally thick hair will find that they can grow it a little slower than those with thinner hair."

Stress

You've probably heard thisstress can make your hair gray, but it can also make your hair appear to be the same length.

"High levels of stress can cause telogen effluvium, a condition that causes the follicles to enter a resting phase and can lead to temporary baldness or a general decrease in the rate of hair growth," explained Dr. Chekuri. "Reducing stress levels can help encourage faster hair growth as well as prevent further damage. Try activities like yoga or meditation to help manage any stress you may be feeling."

The good news is thattelogen effluviumit is usually temporary, but if it persists, contact your doctor to discuss your hair loss.

medicine

While some medications can negatively affect the hair growth cycle, some supplements can do the opposite.

"Certain medications, such as antidepressants and chemotherapy drugs, can cause hair to stop growing or thin," Dr. Chekuri said. "Taking supplements that contain certain vitamins and minerals can also help promote healthy hair growth. Biotin, silica, and zinc are essential for hair growth."

Diet

Diet is an important factor when it comes to overall hair health. "Eating a diet low in essential vitamins and minerals can make your hair brittle and weak, and can even lead to an overall decrease in growth rate," Dr. Chekuri warned. "Eating a diet rich in vitamins and minerals can help promote strong, healthy hair. Foods like nuts, avocados, spinach, and berries are excellent sources of essential nutrients for hair."

hormones

"Hormonal imbalances, such as those caused by menopause or thyroid problems, can cause hair to thin and stop growing," Dr. Chekuri noted. If you are concerned that your hair growth problems are related to a hormonal imbalance, see your doctor.

detoxify the scalp

A healthy scalp sets the stage for healthy hair, so it's important to use adetoxifying scalp serumto remove buildup around hair follicles that results from styling products and impurities. Other benefits of a scalp detox include relieving scalp damage and locking in moisture.

heat threshold style

While heat styling is a fun way to create different looks, too much heat can wreak havoc on your hair's health, depleting its natural oils and causing damage like split ends. "Overuse of heated styling tools, such as curling irons or straighteners, can severely damage hair and prevent further growth," explained Dr. Chekuri. "Limit your use of these hot tools and always use a heat protectant to minimize damage."

Avoid very tight hairstyles

too tighthairstyles that can stress your hairThey include tight ponytails, tight buns, braids, hair extensions, and braids. Instead, opt for loose hairstyles that won't pull on the hair follicles.

Consult a doctor when necessary

If you experience delayed hair growth that persists, make an appointment to see a doctor to make sure your physical health is under control. For example, an underactive thyroid can cause thinning or brittle hair. A dermatologist is a good resource for any hair loss or scalp problems you may have.

Avoid harsh hair products

doctor chekuri advised to use products that contain safe and hair-friendly ingredients, which means they do not contain harsh chemicals. VEGAMOUR product lines are always formulated without phthalates, silicones, GMOs, parabens, sulfates, mineral oils, gluten, and synthetic fragrances, making them perfect for a healthy hair care routine.
